Downtown Dinner Program - Best Practices of General Counsel


University Club, Cathedral Hall, 76 East Monroe St., Chicago.  The Club has a dress code specifically stating no denim, shorts or tennis shoes permitted.  Collared shirts required for men.  Valet parking available.


This program has traditionally been our most popular one and for good reason. If we are not serving in the position of general counsel, we report to one and often aspire to serve in this capacity. We have an all-star panel of accomplished, respected and gifted attorneys lined up to present. Topics include:

Moderator - Meredith Ritchie, VP, General Counsel & Chief Ethics Officer, Alliant Credit Union

Ms. Ritchie oversees the Legal & Compliance Department, the Ethics Program and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team of Alliant, a $9 billion dollar financial cooperative. Prior to joining Alliant, Meredith was Deputy General Counsel for the State of Illinois’ Department of Central Management Services.  Ritchie also served as Corporate Counsel in Accenture’s State and Local Government practice. Currently, Meredith is on the Board of Directors of the Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law, the Board of Directors of the Alliant Credit Union Foundation and the Chair of the Operations Sub-Committee of the American Bar Association Credit Union Committee. Ritchie graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, and received her J.D. from DePaul University College of Law.

Susan (Susie) Lees, EVP, General Counsel & Secretary, The Allstate Corporation

Ms. Lees leads Allstate’s 1,400-person legal team to guide the company’s business strategy, ensure sound compliance and foster a healthy legal, legislative and regulatory environment. Susie joined Allstate in 1988 and moved up through the ranks, holding a variety of leadership positions with increasing responsibility, most notably in her previous role as SVP and Deputy General Counsel for Allstate Financial. Susie is a champion of solutions to key societal issues and serves on The Allstate Foundation Board of Trustees, the boards of the Rand Institute for Civil Justice, the National Association of Women Lawyers, the National Network to End Domestic Violence. She holds an A.B. degree in Political Science from Brown University and a J.D. from the University of Oklahoma College of Law.

Mackenzie Phillips, Chief Corporate Counsel, JLL

Ms. Phillips focuses primarily on compliance, subsidiary management, securities regulation and corporate governance on behalf of JLL, a Fortune 500 company offering specialized real estate services to clients seeking increased value by owning, occupying and investing in real estate. Prior to joining JLL, Mackenzie served as Interim Securities and Corporate Governance at a NYSE-listed online travel company through Axiom Law. Prior to Axiom, she was an Associate at Winston & Strawn, LLP and Mayer Brown, LLP. Ms. Philips is an Adjunct Professor at The John Marshall Law School. She received her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School where she served as Executive Editor of the Michigan Law Review. Ms. Phillips holds her A.B. in French from Cornell University.

James (Jim) Rogers, Chief Legal Officer,

Mr. Rogers directs all areas of legal and compliance, including legal-related aspects of strategic initiatives and acquisition-related legal and integration matters at Prior to joining, Jim was the SVP and General Counsel of Orbitz Worldwide. Mr. Rogers also served as SVP and General Counsel for TLC Vision, North America’s leading LSIK provider. Previously, Jim was a partner at Latham & Watkins. Mr. Rogers served as a Law Clerk to both the Hon. Charles Clark of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Hon. Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Jim is active in many civic and charitable causes and currently serves as board member for The Appleseed Foundation and the Active Transportation Alliance. Jim earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, his Master’s Degree from Princeton and a B.S. in Economics from Yale University.
