As a volunteer leader you should not feel that leading the activities of a local chapter or national committee is an overwhelming job that will take you on a solo voyage into uncharted waters.
Through ACC you have access to incomparable expertise that can help you in your leadership position and that will make your tenure rewarding and fun.
There is a wealth of experience residing in the heads of all of the volunteer leaders who have come before you. You should reach out to your predecessors for advice and perspective during your tenure. As you consider tapping into this rich vein of expertise, you should consider tapping into the experience of the current and previous volunteer leaders of the various National Committees of ACC. All lawyers like to give advice and ACC members are no exception. Previous leaders, be they at the local chapter level or the national committee level, can provide you with insights into what may work for you, what should be avoided and ways to get things done. They also may be able to work with you and your team to help develop relevant programs for your constituency and they may be able to provide specific resources for these programs. Previous leaders may be able to help you expand your network into the network that the previous leaders have developed during their tenure. In addition, by reaching out to previous volunteer leaders you are providing a mechanism to help keep the "alumni" involved in the current activities of ACC.
You should also consider reaching out to your constituency in a formal manner, be it in the form of a survey or some other two way communication, that will help you obtain valuable feedback from your constituency that can help you identify the issues that are important to them. Once you receive this feedback you can tailor your activities in accordance with the information you receive. This will help ensure that your activities are relevant to the needs and desires of your constituency and help you grow your group. By focusing on relevant activities that are important to your constituency, you also should have an easier time recruiting additional volunteer leaders because they will be able to see "what's in it for them" and thus identify the tangible benefit that they will receive from volunteering, i.e. leadership training, networking and CLE.
Remember, you are not alone, ACC has members in your region and across the country that would enthusiastically provide you with support and other resources to help you during your tenure.
