Washington, D.C. (December 4, 2009) – The Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) presented its 2009 “Matthew J. Whitehead, II Diversity Award” to Michele Coleman Mayes, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer, and the Legal Department of The Allstate Corporation. The event took place in Northbrook, Illinois on Wednesday at the annual Allstate Department of Law and Regulation meeting. Presented by ACC Deputy General Counsel and Vice President-Legal Resources, James A. Merklinger, the award recognizes a legal department for achieving the highest level of commitment to diversity within the in-house community, and for raising the standards of the corporate law department’s diversity efforts.
“I commend Michele Coleman Mayes and Allstate for their commitment to creating a diverse legal community. They emphasize with each of their law firms the importance of providing a multicultural workplace environment. Allstate has also had excellent results partnering with high school students from a wide variety of backgrounds to help them pursue legal careers. We applaud Michele and Allstate for their remarkable dedication to mentoring the next generation,” said ACC President Frederick J. Krebs.
In 2005, Allstate formed the Allstate/Premier Law Firm Program (PLF) to improve the quality of outside counsel services while reducing its cost and to enhance the department's contribution to the legal profession's diversity efforts. As a continuum, the program held its first PLF Diversity Roundtable Conference in 2006 to give students from the Street Law Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program firsthand insights about the practice of law. The Corporate Legal Diversity Pipeline Program exposes minority student to careers in law by partnering corporate legal departments with high school law classes. Working closely with several firms in the PLF, Allstate hosts programs in four regions: Northbrook/Chicago, IL; Northern California; Southern California; and in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Mayes joined The Allstate Corporation in September 2007 as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. She previously served in leadership positions at Unisys Corporation and Colgate-Palmolive, in addition to Pitney Bowes.
