The American Corporate Counsel Association (ACCA) and Spherion Corporation
retained the services of The Work Institute, LLC to conduct a study of CEOs. A
random sample of 1500 companies with 100 or more employees was provided to The
Work Institute. Each was faxed a cover letter stressing the importance of the
study and asking that the CEO, COO, CFO, or other senior executive complete the
3-page survey. Tele-researchers made up to six phone calls to the sample to
encourage participation; in six cases the tele-researchers completed the survey
during these calls via phone interviews. Respondents were promised a copy of the
complete report as an incentive to participate.
One-hundred and forty-nine (149) useable surveys were collected for a response
rate of 10 percent. While this rate of return reduces confidence in the ability
to generalize the results to all corporations in the United States, the results
yield important indicators for the legal profession.
